Would love this only if such a feature would not cause performance loss. I love sumatra because its responsiveness, I would not trade performance inti more features.

IMO this is the only missing feature before being able to fully move away from Acrobat Reader & co. I used to work on a IT company, and I "converted" a lot of people, my family included, to SumatraPDF. But every time comes a blocker issue: "I need to fill a PDF form, how to do that"? I still push for SumatraPDF all the time I could, and personnally love it, and use only it :)

More often than not, the PDF doc wasn't built properly anyway. So, is it possible to just add a function to do an overlay to the PDF? Another option would be to use another third party "text editor" or plugin to create whatever that form required. I've often used Adobe reader to do this, and it works, even if it is very difficult. Still, if the form designer didn't design any fill-in, or broken fill-in, that beats doing it by hand. I generally only use and send a "print-to-PDF" PDF file, to prevent any direct editing. Done right, the overlay editor should be able to add text formatted any way you want, on top of any doc, JPG, etc. Seems easier than trying to interpret and then edit the PDF file directly, which you could include separately.

IRS 1040 is not an ISO standard structure it is designed as an Adobe compatible proprietary XFA Format *"This document restricts some of the Editor features to allow for extended features in Adobe® Reader. You can save a copy of this document that will not be restricted. | x. =) Save As"* standard forms are AcroForm structure as supported by Open standard. SO MuPDF can work with F1040 but some XFA forms may not be to Clients Requirements

This would be awesome!!! Then we could really say goodbye to Adobe's bloat once and for all!

This is the only thing preventing me from switching from Adobe :/

F. S what the 114 page instructions and a browser fail to show is that that non ISO standard type of XFA form runs scripts which were supposed to throw up a warning page but many departmental forms failt to show it and the script action is to ensure the form filler knows "ADBE.Viewer_string_Need_New_Version_Msg_Updater = "This PDF form requires a newer version of Adobe Acrobat. Without a newer version, the form may display, but may not work properly. Some form elements might not be visible at all. If an internet connection is available, clicking OK will download and install the latest version.";" so it is clearly marked internally as works in Acrobat only, but in the interests of "inclusivity" that is not highlighted that they potentially need to run scripting.

Is this being worked on or is it just in limbo? The reason I'm trying sumatra is because okular doesn't render checkboxes correctly but seeing as form support is basically non existant I think I will need to use my browser's pdf viewer and that's just horrible.

The open source browser Firefox has offered since about 2020 the ability to open and edit PDFs. I believe the four options below offer the best basic integration for file editing.
